Speed Is an Adaptation: Why Better Training Is About More Than Drills, Workouts, and Effort

When we talk about developing speed, the conversation often gravitates toward things we can easily see and measure.
Which exercises should we use?
How heavy should the sled be?
How many sprints should an athlete run?
What drill will fix their mechanics?
How much stronger do they need to become?
Those are worthwhile questions. But they can also distract us from a much bigger one:
What are we actually trying to change?
The purpose of training isn't to become better at training. It is to create adaptations that allow an athlete to perform better.
Once we begin looking at speed development through that lens, coaching becomes less about collecting exercises and more about understanding the athlete as a constantly adapting system.
And that changes almost everything.
Resilience Is Part of the Training
Athletes are going to fail.
They'll have bad starts.
They'll miss times.
They'll execute movements poorly.
They'll have workouts where nothing seems to click.
Our instinct as coaches is often to eliminate those experiences. We want successful repetitions because successful repetitions feel like evidence that the program is working.
But struggle isn't necessarily an interruption in development.
Sometimes struggle is the development.
Resilience isn't the ability to perform perfectly. It's the ability to encounter a problem, absorb what happened, adjust, and fully commit to the next opportunity.
That matters because competition is unpredictable.
Eventually something will go wrong.
An athlete may stumble out of the blocks. Someone may unexpectedly pull ahead. A race may not unfold according to plan. The athlete may simply not feel good that day.
The question isn't whether athletes will encounter those situations.
They will.
The question is whether their training has prepared them to respond.
If we protect athletes from every mistake, we may unintentionally remove the experiences that teach adaptability.
Instead of asking, "How can I prevent athletes from failing?"
Perhaps a better question is, "How can I teach athletes to respond when they do?"
Resilience is measured by recovery—not perfection.
Getting Faster Sometimes Means Wasting Less
Speed development is often approached as a production problem.
Produce more force.
Become stronger.
Generate more power.
Increase neural output.
All of those things can matter. But there's another side of the equation that receives far less attention:
How much of the athlete's available capacity is being wasted?
Every athlete has finite resources available for performance.
Excessive muscular tension consumes some of them.
Overthinking consumes some.
Unnecessary movement consumes some.
Fear, poor coordination, and trying too hard can consume more.
Every bit of energy directed somewhere unnecessary is energy that isn't contributing efficiently to moving the athlete down the track.
This is why faster doesn't always mean "more."
Sometimes faster means less waste.
Watch great sprinters and you'll see enormous force production paired with remarkable efficiency. There is aggression without chaos. Power without unnecessary tension. Effort without movement everywhere.
That should change one of our fundamental coaching questions.
Instead of always asking:
"How can we help this athlete produce more?"
We should also ask:
"Where is this athlete leaking what they already have?"
An athlete may not need a bigger engine.
They may need a better transmission.
The goal isn't maximum effort from every muscle at every moment. The goal is directing the appropriate amount of energy to the right places at precisely the right times.
The fastest athlete may not always produce the most.
They may simply waste the least.
The Athlete Is an Ecosystem
One reason speed development is difficult is that the qualities contributing to performance don't exist independently.
Strength matters.
Technique matters.
Coordination matters.
Confidence matters.
Recovery matters.
Intent matters.
But changing one can influence several others.
Improve an athlete's confidence and their intent may increase.
Increase intent and their ability to express force may change.
Improve recovery and they may gain access to greater neural output.
Reduce unnecessary tension and coordination may improve.
Improve coordination and the strength they already possess may suddenly become more useful.
This is why athletic development can't always be reduced to finding one weak quality and attacking it directly.
The athlete is an ecosystem.
Sometimes the fastest way to improve one quality is to change something somewhere else in the system.
Imagine an athlete struggling with projection during acceleration.
The obvious solution might be technical instruction.
But what if the real limitation is inadequate force production?
Or poor timing?
Or fear of committing aggressively to the movement?
Or accumulated fatigue?
Or excessive tension created by trying to consciously control every position?
The visible problem and the underlying problem aren't necessarily the same thing.
That is what makes coaching complicated.
It's also what makes coaching fascinating.
Don't just train qualities. Train the relationships between them.
The Workout Is More Than the Workout
If athletes are complex systems, then programming can't simply be sets, reps, percentages, distances, and rest periods.
Those variables matter.
But they're only part of the training stimulus.
Consider two athletes completing exactly the same sprint session.
Same distances.
Same rest.
Same number of repetitions.
Same facility.
On paper, they completed the same workout.
But one athlete trained beside someone who challenged them competitively. They felt confident, attacked every repetition, received useful feedback, and left energized.
The other athlete trained alone, worried about making mistakes, received constant corrections, and gradually became more hesitant as the session progressed.
Was it really the same workout?
Physically, perhaps.
Experientially, absolutely not.
The environment is part of the program.
Training partners matter.
Competition matters.
Confidence matters.
Coaching style matters.
Feedback matters.
Culture matters.
Relationships matter.
Athletes don't adapt to spreadsheets.
Human beings adapt to experiences.
That doesn't mean programming variables aren't important. Loads, volumes, intensities, and recovery periods still matter tremendously.
But those numbers operate inside an environment.
Great coaches understand both.
They don't simply write workouts.
They create conditions where productive adaptation is more likely to happen.
Stop Falling in Love With Drills
Once we view training through adaptation rather than exercises, another coaching habit becomes easier to challenge: Our tendency to fall in love with drills.
There are no magic exercises.
There are only exercises that create useful adaptations within a particular context.
A sled isn't valuable simply because resisted sprinting can be effective.
A plyometric isn't valuable simply because jumping is explosive.
A sprint drill isn't valuable because a world-class sprinter posted a video of themselves performing it.
The important question is:
What is this doing for this athlete?
Does it improve projection?
Does it change force application?
Does it develop rhythm?
Does it improve elasticity?
Does it expose the athlete to a movement problem they need to learn how to solve?
If it does, the exercise may have tremendous value.
If it doesn't, its popularity doesn't matter.
This also explains why the same exercise can be exactly what one athlete needs and unnecessary for another.
The exercise hasn't changed.
The athlete has.
Coaches therefore shouldn't become loyal to exercises.
We should become loyal to outcomes.
Coaching the Adaptation
Taken together, these ideas point toward a different way of thinking about speed development.
Training isn't simply something we do to athletes.
It's a process through which athletes interact with problems, environments, feedback, competition, and their own physical capabilities—and gradually reorganize themselves into better performers.
Our job as coaches is to influence that process.
Sometimes that means adding strength.
Sometimes it means improving technique.
Sometimes it means reducing tension.
Sometimes it means creating competition.
Sometimes it means allowing an athlete to struggle long enough to discover a solution.
And sometimes it means removing something rather than adding another drill.
The question should continually return to:
What adaptation does this athlete need, and what conditions are most likely to produce it?
That question keeps the athlete—not the workout, exercise, technology, or coaching system—at the center of the process.
Because ultimately, the program doesn't get faster.
The drill doesn't get faster.
The spreadsheet doesn't get faster.
The athlete does.
And our responsibility is to create an environment where that adaptation has the best opportunity to emerge.
